Literary Analysis Of Twelve Angry Men By Reginald Rose

Literary devices provide the foundation for all written works. They connect the writer and the reader through the use of language. Literary devices can be used to highlight details and make the text more conflictual. Sometimes they also serve as a reference to real-life problems. Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose is a screenplay that uses imagery and metaphors to tell the story about the jury’s decision on life or death and the bias. Rose uses imagery to describe the jury chamber literally and atmospherically to show the jurors’ burden. While they may have made a decision about a man’s fate, many jurors didn’t think the case was worthy of argument. He doesn’t owe us anything. He was given a fair trial. Rose’s jury diversity brings out opposing views, further complicating the conflict. The characters’ individual personalities also make it difficult for them to be open-minded, impartial and objective when dealing in law. Juror 10 believes there is no reason he should be forced to spend his time in a small, uncomfortable room for someone he does not know personally.Additionally, metaphors can extend upon a concept, creating a comparison between two subjects. Rose uses metaphors to bring up real life situations in her screenplay. The heat in the room is one metaphor. This symbolises the tension between jurors. The jury room’s locked door is another metaphor, which symbolises the fact that jurors are literally and figuratively bound by their own stubborn views and responsibilities. “You bring your heart out about injustice and slum children and make up wild stories. You’ve got some lovely, soft-hearted women listening to you. It’s all too much! You people, what’s the deal? “The kid’s guilty!” Although the jury is now engaged in discussing the case Juror3 is set on his initial opinion. He will not listen to any other explanations. Juror 3 uses his own metaphor to accuse Juror 8 being too sentimental. Rose points to the fact that Juror 3 doesn’t sit down and have a civil and serious conversation. He instead lets his anger get out of control and prolongs the sentence because his personal opinions cloud and cloud his judgment. Literary devices help readers understand the meaning of the text. They build on a writer’s story or ideas. Reginald Rose uses metaphors and imagery to communicate the injustice and intensity surrounding the justice system. This writing technique improves a story’s telling by creating themes and concepts for the reader to understand. Works cited
